A bowl full of Zen

Posted by Joan (Greencastle, Pa., United States) on 1 October 2007 in Lifestyle & Culture.

I was cleaning up after dinner, and had a zen moment when I happened upon the last handful of peas in the bottom of this bowl...
I couldn't bear to throw them away, thinking of starving children worldwide.
I thought of Darfur, and Burma... thought of inner city children in my own country who have nothing to eat but government subsidized school lunches... I stood in that spot in the kitchen for the longest time...
feeling sad... feeling gratitude... feeling helpless.
All from a handful of leftover peas.
